WWF Peru presented 'Justina del Mar', the specialized chatbot that will resolve queries or doubts about inspection, sanctions and reporting channels in the artisanal fishing sector

Intending to contribute to the strengthening of the knowledge of people in the artisanal fishing sector at the national level, WWF Peru - together with representatives of Fishers’ Organizations, fisheries specialists and public institutions in the fishing sector - has created "Justina del Mar", which provides consultation options on inspection, sanctions and reporting channels through the WhatsApp application. This chatbot will provide information in a simple, instant and free way, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Milagros Mitma, Marine Governance Officer of WWF Peru, commented that this initiative will also contribute to the transparency of the artisanal fishing sector and its relationship with the sustainability of fisheries. “Justina will be a digital platform that will strengthen knowledge about key information on the artisanal fishing sector, preventing illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, as well as corruption scenarios,” she added.

How does “Justina del Mar” work?

This tool works in a very easy way. To obtain the information, you must perform the following steps: 1) Add the WhatsApp number +51 980 565 683 to your contact list, 2) Start the conversation with a greeting. Next, Justina will ask you to read and accept the terms and conditions, 3) Upon accepting the terms and conditions, she will automatically provide you with the consultation options, which you must select with a click.

What information will they find?

The main menu of the WhatsApp chat bot will offer information about inspection, sanctions and reporting channels in the fishing sector.

At the launch event, Carlos David Alberto Castro Barriga, Director of the Monitoring and Evaluation of the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), mentioned: “Technological tools like Justina serve as an example for public management to provide basic information on the fishing sector, and in a simple way, to the citizens.”

On the other hand, the chatbot contains information resources, which can be downloaded and saved on cell phones for future reference.

“At WWF we consider that collaboration between all fishing actors makes possible the development of digital initiatives such as this informative chatbot for the benefit of artisanal fishers and shipowners”, added Milagros Mitma.
