Launch of the Leaders Group of the National Action Platform on Plastics of Peru (NPAP Peru)
The National Action Platform on Plastics of Peru (NPAP PERU) is a multi-actor collaborative action space that promotes the transition of plastics towards a circular economy, addressing its entire life cycle. On August 22, the first meeting of the NPAP Leaders Group was held, bringing together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, civil society organizations, academia, and international cooperations, all of these actors united by a shared commitment to achieving a nation free from plastic pollution.
NPAP PERU is an initiative promoted by the Ministry of the Environment of Peru (MINAM), the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF Peru). It is a constructive space whose objective is to facilete cooperation between various actors to promote the transition towards a circular economy of plastics, reducing the impact of this material on nature and our health.
With the objective of coordinating and directing joint efforts to design, implement and monitor strategies and actions that promote the circular economy of plastics in the country, NPAP PERU seeks to consolidate a Group of Leaders as the highest governing body of the platform.
The first meeting of the Leaders Group was recently held, chaired by MINAM,with the National Society of Industries serving as vice president, and WWF Peru acting as the secretariat. High-level representatives from various institutions participated in the meeting, such as the Ministry of Production, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Asociación Recíclame Cumple con tu Planeta, Peruvian Society of Environmental Law, Interuniversity Environmental Network, National Federation of Recyclers of Peru, Peruvian Association of the Plastic Industry, Association of the Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Soft Drinks Industry, Grupo AJE, Coca Cola Servicios del Perú, Nestlé Perú, German Cooperation and the British Embassy.
During the session, Adriana Ghersi from WWF and National Coordinator of NPAP Peru, commented: “With this first meeting we seek for leaders from various sectors involved throughout the plastics value chain to promote strategic actions through multi-actor synergy, guaranteeing inclusion and a gender focus in each of these.”

During this inaugural meeting, the participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening synergies aimed at eradicating plastic pollution in the country. From WWF, Kirsten Schuijt, the General Director of WWF International, emphasized the significance of NPAP in bolstering national efforts to reduce plastic pollution throughout its entire life cycle, and that it strengthens the positioning of Peru as a regional and international reference in this ambitious work. “It is crucial to reach national and international environmental commitments, to work in coordination and together for a pollution-free nature,” she said.
The creation of the NPAP PERU Leaders Group marks a milestone in the fight against plastic pollution in the country. With the participation of key actors and the commitment demonstrated in this first meeting, this platform becomes a fundamental pillar to articulate efforts in the search for a country free of plastic pollution.
