Earth Hour Returns to Inspire Guyana to Safeguard Freshwater

This year’s theme, “The Journey of Water,” emphasises the critical importance of safeguarding freshwater resources since Earth Hour coincides with World Water Day. Earth Hour will not only focus on raising awareness around the pressing challenges facing freshwater resources, such as pollution, over-extraction, and climate change but also celebrate the efforts made by communities, organisations and government agencies to safeguard freshwater resources.

From 8:30 pm local time on 22nd March, WWF’s Earth Hour, the world’s largest grassroots environmental movement, returns for its 19th edition with the ‘Biggest Hour for Earth’ in support and celebration of our planet. Earth Hour is a beacon of positivity, hope, and inspiration to rally as many people as possible in over 180 countries and territories.

In Guyana, this year’s theme, “The Journey of Water,” emphasises the critical importance of safeguarding freshwater resources since Earth Hour coincides with World Water Day. Earth Hour will not only focus on raising awareness around the pressing challenges facing freshwater resources, such as pollution, over-extraction, and climate change but also celebrate the efforts made by communities, organisations and government agencies to safeguard freshwater resources.

The main activities in Guyana will take place at the National Park, and the aim is to encourage and inspire participants to "Give an Hour for Earth" and “Watch Over Water.”  These activities will include an Eco-Explorers scavenger hunt, a Water-Village Fair and Exhibition, and the countdown to Lights Off Concert, which will all see support and participation from various organisations, businesses, and government agencies.

Aiesha Williams, WWF-Guianas Conservation Director, remarked: “In Guyana, we want to make Earth Hour more than just an event; it’s an opportunity for us to come together as a people to strengthen our long-term relationship with nature, specifically, our freshwater resources and to take positive action in safeguarding these vital resources.”

Earth Hour 2025 encourages Guyanese from all walks of life to embrace a positive attitude toward nature, especially towards our precious freshwater resources, by dedicating one hour to nature-supportive activities.
