Ministry of Environment presents technical proposals that will contribute to the development of sustainable cities in Lima and Callao
The Ministry of Environment delivered to the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima and the Provincial Municipality of Callao the technical recommendations to develop modern and sustainable cities in these jurisdictions through the implementation of adequate urban planning and management with environmental standards.
The protocol ceremony took place on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, as part of the closing event of the GEF Project called "Support to the National Platform for Sustainable Cities and Climate Change in Lima". Within this framework, the Peruvian Minister of the Environment, Albina Ruiz, pointed out that the objective of the study presented is to move towards a sustainable country in order to improve the quality of life of citizens, who have clean public spaces and more green areas.
To this end, he underscored the need for adequate territorial planning that gives priority to the environmental component. In this line, he gave as an example the organization and distribution of urban spaces, where places should be established to place the waste generated and containers so that people can separate it, as well as other considerations related to the conservation of urban ecosystems (hills, marshes, river banks) and to face climate change.
The project, executed by the Ministry of the Environment, involved the participation of national and local government entities from Lima and Callao, and was supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Thus, the event was attended by the Vice Minister of Housing and Urbanism, Hernán Navarro; the mayor of Carmen de la Legua, Edwards Infante; the manager of the Metropolitan Regional Government of Lima, José Tello; officials of the metropolitan municipality of Lima and Callao, as well as the Country Director of WWF in Peru, Kurt Holle, among others.
"The Sustainable Cities project has provided central and local government entities with planning tools that we hope will contribute to informed decision-making on issues as diverse as urban planning, environmental and climate change management, disaster risk management, water management, among many others," said Kurt Holle, Country Director of WWF Peru.
Innovative proposals
This sectoral document is the result of 5 years of multidisciplinary work and includes proposals to strengthen urban planning processes, environmental and climate change management, disaster risk management, water management tools, as well as master plans to improve the environment of stations of the Integrated Transportation System of Lima and Callao, in the districts of Carmen de la Legua, Independencia, La Victoria and San Isidro.
It also includes biodiversity action plans to conserve urban ecosystems, profiles of public investment projects related to the improvement of neighborhoods with the provision of green spaces and transportation, among others.
In addition, a cooperation agreement will be signed between the environment sector and the aforementioned provincial municipalities for the formal delivery of the inputs generated by the "Sustainable Cities" project in September of this year, from which it is expected that these municipalities will begin the process of incorporating the proposals, recommendations and projects in the management and urban planning of their respective jurisdictions.
